“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread

inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important).

It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult

concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.”

Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)

I think what the quote is trying to imply is that an engineer will find difficulty in conveying specific engineering terms to people with no engineering background. For instance, the audience may not understand the complexity of systems, parts, and how everything connects. Engineers will have to find ways to simplify the functions and features in layman's terms for the public to understand.

  1. I agree with you! Engineers are definitely misunderstood often these day. Even with the help of technology, it is still a tough career filled with never-ending obstacles.

  2. I do agree that engineers are unvalued. First of all, many different fields of engineering jobs are available and even we as engineers might not fully understand every field of engineering. What we know or do usually is specialised in a specific field. Hence, we are unable to share or understand if an engineer is to share his point of view if someone is not related to the field.
